HATCH SENTENCED TO MORE
THAN FOUR YEARS
FOR TAX EVASION
PROVIDENCE----Sunday night, Survivor host Jeff Probst told new $1 million winner Aras Baskauskas, "Just be sure to do one thing.....pay your taxes."
Original Survivor champion Richard Hatch was sentenced Tuesday to more than four years in jail for evading taxes on his 2000 winnings and additional income.
In the process, U.S. District Judge Ernest Torres called Hatch a liar. "There's no nice way to say it. Mr. Hatch lied," Torres said in announcing the sentence. He said Hatch deliberately offered false testimony. The 51-month sentence was longer than the expected 33 to 41-month term.
Torres suggested Hatch attempted to treat the case as an extension of his Survivor game, calling segments of Hatch's testimony perjury and "inherently incredible."
Hatch continued to show no contrition before and after the sentence, telling Torres: "I believe I've been completely truthful and completely forthcoming throughout the entire process."
The 45-year-old Hatch, who lives in Newport, R.I., was convicted of failing to report the $1 million prize money as income, as well as evading taxes on $327,000 in salary from a Boston radio show and $28,000 in rental property income.
Hatch's attorney Michael Minns depicted his client as an inept bookkeeper who could not cope with the sudden celebrity from Survivor. He indicated the case will be appealed.
One prosecutor suggested Hatch was manipulating accountants and bank tellers in the same fashion he did fellow contestants on the first Survivor. Hatch, who turned down a plea arrangement, was also sentenced to three years of post-jail supervised release, ordered to repay the taxes and to undergo counseling.
Accountant Jodi Rodrigues Wallis testified that Hatch never told her about any of his 2000 income except for his Survivor winnings. Hatch testified that he gave Wallis all his tax forms and invoices from his corporate training business.
Hatch was earlier convicted on seven counts of bank, mail and wire fraud charges relating to his charity, Horizon Bound, an outdoors program he proposed to help troubled teens and children.
During the 2000 Survivor, Hatch---who pioneered in the alliances and manipulation so prevalent in game operas---was voted by one national magazine "the most hated man in America." He returned for Survivor All-Stars and was eliminated a week after old rival Sue Hawk withdrew from the game, accusing Hatch of sexual harrassment. She never filed charges and Hatch never apologized during a subsequent interview on The Early Show.

DAVIES SEEKS CONTESTANTS
FOR CHAIN REACTION
A contestant call is underway for a planned revival of the '80s game show Chain Reaction.
Michael Davies is executive producer of the word association game, which originated in 1980 with Bill Cullen as host on NBC.
Tim Vincent of Access Hollywood has hosted pilots for Chain Reaction, the first remake tackled by Davies out of the GSN library. Bob Stewart created the game, which became a Sony/GSN property when Stewart sold his library in the mid-1990s.
The game pits three men and three women against each other in an ascending word-connection format.
The show was revived in 1989 for USA Network with Blake Emmons and Geoff Edwards as host during a concurrent run in Canada.
