HOWIE SAYS NO TO SYNDICATION |
||||||||
![]() See if Lightning Strikes Twice Comedian/magician Penn Jillette hosts the mind game at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) every night except for the opener Dec. 18 (9 p.m. after Deal or No Deal). Identity tests a contestant's ability to read people "based off of perception and judgments of others," according to executive producer Ben Silverman, who also oversees USA Network's Nashville Star for Reveille Entertainment and NBC's Biggest Loser. A contestant faces 12 strangers with 12 identities. The player selects an identity, ranging from a profession to a shoe size, and tries to match it with one of the dozen strangers. If he or she succeeds in matching all 12, the top jackpot is $500,000. ![]() Looks for Contestants for New Episodes As in the first series of shows, executive producer Michael Davies is seeking teams of three with connections either as friends, classmates, co-workers or family members. Applications are available at embassyrow.com. Potential contestants to appear with host Dylan Lane must be at least 18 and may not have appeared on any GSN show in the last two years or any other network or cable television game/contest show in the last year. Players accepted for the show must agree not to appear on another game show for six months after the initial broadcast of their Chain Reaction episode. USA OpensContest with Big Lots USA Network is launching its first co-branded sweepstakes with closeout retailer Big Lots. The Big Lots! Character Hunt was announced by Chris McCumber, senior vice president for marketing and brand strategy. The sweepstakes is an online and on-air treasure hunt which will involve website biglots.usanetwork.com. Viewers and users will participate in six USA character hunts. The grand prize is $10,000 with 30 first and second place prizes also to be awarded. The promotion runs through Christmas Eve. Users are required to register for the hunt at the website. After registration, entrants receive etails on how to search for six mystery characters from USA Network's top original series, including Nashville Star and WWE Raw. After each hunt, the mystery character will be revealed and the user will be entered for a chance at the $10,000. Winners will be announced in January. Best of MatchGame DVD Now Hits Store Shelves If your shelves are not full of taped-from-GSN repeats of Match Game, the series' first box set DVD is now in stores and online. Best of Match Game is a four-DVD set from Brentwood Home Video. Pre-orders are already available from amazon.com. The DVDs hit the stores Tuesday in the same week as a Match Game blitz on GSN, including the premiere of Match Game: Behind the Blanks, the first in a series of game show documentaries produced by Asylum Entertainment for GSN, is scheduled. In the GSN classic overnight slot later the next morning, a rarely-seen black-and-white episode from the original NBC Match Game of the 1960s was shown with Orson Bean and Jayne Mansfield. What was billed as the original pilot for the '60s Match Game appears on the DVD. ![]() |
![]() THE ENTIRE SYNDIE MARKET? A daytime version of Deal has been considered the odds-on favorite to become the first new game show offering in syndication in five years. Yet, a Monday story in Broadcasting and Cable suggests if NBCU opts not to go forward with Deal, CBS Television Distribution Group's new Combination Lock and The Joker's Wild! could also be in jeopardy. CTDG executives deny that speculation. This week's Cover Story explores whether Howie's "no" is a final answer, how the syndication market could be affected and why new game shows have had a difficult time selling in a crowded marketplace.
