![]() ![]() to Tuesday Against Idol Show Me the Money, which has generated mediocre ratings in its Wednesday at 8 time slot, will move head-on against American Idol Tuesdays at 8 beginning in January. ABC made the announcement this morning. The network also announced it would move Lost to 10 p.m. Wednesdays when it returns Feb. 7 to avoid the Idol results show. Show Me the Money has averaged a 5.3/8 for its two Wednesday airings to date, with a 2.4 in 18-49 age demographics. Stlil on the bench awaiting a time slot: Jimmy Kimmel's Set for Life. ![]() Documentary Draws Top Numbers Sunday night's first showing of the documentary drew 614,000 total viewers. The 450,000 households was also the largest number of homes viewing a GSN original in 2006. Compared to regular 8-9 p.m. programming Sundays, Behind the Blank was up 57 percent in households and total viewers, and 121 percent in the network's target demographic of 25-54. The documentary was the first of seven scheduled hours produced by Asylum Entertainment. The next is Dec. 10, The Chuck Barris Story: My Life on the Edge. ![]() Deal Surfaces Wednesdays in Jan. The second weekly episode will surface Wednesdays at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), to follow Friday Night Lights, which moves to Wednesdays at 8. The move was announced by NBC as part of a wholesale series of midseason changes. The strong Monday at 8 episode stays intact (Monday's episode produced a dominant 10.8/16 Nielsen rating/share, 5.2 in 18-49 age demographics). NBC will also air first-run episodes of Deal and 1 vs. 100 Christmas night. On a related note, the network announced a renewal of The Biggest Loser for the 2007-08 season. The diet game opera is averaging a 3.1 in 18-49s and 7.4 million viewers this season. ![]() Grease, Not Regis for Midseason NBC Entertainment executives announced Wednesday its new talent contest Grease: You're the One That I Want will be the 8-9 p.m. (ET/PT) replacement for Sunday Night Football beginning Jan. 7. The first two episodes will run 90 minutes before reverting to the regular slot. An original lineup issued in the spring had America's Top Talent, the network's summer hit, going in the Sunday at 8 slot. No announcement has been made as to the future of ATT. Billy Bush of Access Hollywood and Denise Van Outen will co-host the hour. The Apprentice will return with its Los Angeles competition from 9:30-11 Jan. 7 and 14 before moving into its permanent 9-10 p.m. slot. ![]() Chief Says Top Surprise Is Interested Parties In a conversation with TVgameshows.net webmaster Steve Beverly Tuesday night, Roberts said the bounce in game shows at the broadcast network level is giving GSN an increase in pitches from producers within a wider net. Roberts said the agreement with Dutch television to do the first 20 episodes of That's the Question with Bob Goen has been a satisfactory test. "Bob's done a wonderful job for us and the show is getting a good sampling. That's continuing through the repeat run," said Roberts. "It will be a contender for our schedule next year. We hope we have at least two new original games next year and That's the Question could be one of them." Roberts' conversation covered a wide variety of possibilities for GSN programming. Selected clips will be presented on TVgameshows.net in two weeks. ![]() Slated Dec. 10 as GSN Spec The Chuck Barris Story: My Life on the Edge, second in a series of seven hour-long documentaries for GSN, premieres Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). A repeat showing airs three hours later. The special traces the life story of the Philadelphia-born Barris as he reaches a pinnacle by bringing ABC the original Dating Game and The Newlywed Game and NBC's tribute to bad talent, The Gong Show. Concurrently, the hour delves into Barris's personal tragedies, including failed marriages and the loss of his daughter Della to a drug overdose. Among the interviewees: Barris himself, Gong Show panelists Jamie Farr and Phyllis Diller, Newlywed Game host Bob Eubanks, actor George Clooney, NBC sportscaster Al Michaels (formerly a Dating Game production assistant), former ABC programming executive Len Goldberg and Gong Show regular Gene (Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine) Patton. Original Dating Game emcee Jim Lange narrates the documentary. The following Sunday, Game Shows' Greatest Moments depicts selected classic vignettes culled from the GSN library and from the memories of a panel of performers and analysts. Game Show Hall of Fame: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire takes the stage Jan. 21 with interviews and segments from the ABC version of the series. Jan. 28 brings The Women Who Changed Game Shows with discussions of Betty White, Arlene Francis and other key female pioneering and breakthrough performers. Each of the documentaries airs at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) with a repeat run at 11 p.m. Asylum Entertainment supervises production. ![]() Holiday Bargain for Shoppers In the 1960s, based on his association with musical game shows, Gilbert recorded two albums of standards. White will take viewers on tours of the landscape of South Carolina's Lowcountry. One week will focus on White's hometown of North Myrtle Beach. She will visit her favorite local hangouts. “I’m thrilled to take Wheel of Fortune to my birthplace—South Carolina,” said White in a statement. “I am so proud of where I grew up and want to share the charm of this beautiful state with our viewers.” Also on tap is the annual Country Music Stars Week, in which country music fans will be paired with today’s top country music recording artists, with the stars’ winnings going to their favorite charities. A custom-designed set will be constructed at The Charleston Area Convention Center that will feature images of Charleston's landmarks. Host station is WCBD/2, the city's NBC affiliate. "We are looking forward to our first-ever remote in Charleston,” said executive producer Harry Friedman. “By taking our viewers along with us to Vanna’s birthplace, we can showcase the history, grace and tradition that this state has to offer.” Viewers may obtain free tickets through Dec. 15. The 10-show tournament will tape April 21 and 22. Fifteen collegians from across the U.S. will square off in a battle for the $100,000 top prize. “University of Southern California is one of the finest educational institutions in the country,” said Jeopardy! executive producer Harry Friedman in a statement. “For nearly a decade, Jeopardy! has taped its college championships from some amazing universities across the country and now we return to our hometown of Los Angeles, a region abundant with great schools and great students.” The college playoffs return to L.A. for the first time since 2001, when the event was staged at UCLA's Pauley Pavillion. The episodes air April 30 through May 11. The runner-up earns a minimum $50,000 and the third place competitor takes home $25,000. ![]()
Cover Story: Ira Skutch is a name synonymous with Goodson-Todman classic game shows. He directed Bud Collyer during the later years of Beat the Clock and called the shots for the NBC version of Match Game. When Mark Goodson opted to remake the Gene Rayburn favorite for CBS in 1973, Skutch was named producer. He opens his personal memory banks about the series as a companion to this week's GSN documentary on the game. Part 2: ABC's new Show Me the Money was given a huge lead-in from the finale of Dancing with the Stars before Thanksgiving. Show owner FremantleMedia is stripping Tribune Entertainment of syndicating the game.The surprise move is another blow to the financially-strapped Tribune Corporation. Several of Tribune's newspapers are experiencing declining circulation and the company is bracing for a possible sale. Feud is the most significant first-run pickup for Debmar-Mercury, which will also sell advertising for the John O'Hurley-hosted strip. Fremantle has announced no change in Tribune's distribution rights to American Idol Rewind for weekend syndication. The B&C story speculates Debmar-Mercury may have the inside track to distribute other former Goodson-Todman game show properties, including the classic black-and-white library which now airs only on Sunday night/Monday morning on GSN. ![]() The 17-year-old Goggin won a $5,000 scholarship and a berth in the NVC finals in New York City March 5 of next year. GSN will televise the national championship. Goggin survived a competition with 74 other entrants. GSN has teamed with The Princeton Review to create the competition. Seven other preliminaries are in progress in some of the nation's major cities. Goggin and 49 others will compete for a $40,000 educational savings plan in the finals. The champion attends Boston Latin Academy. He sealed the victory by answering eight of the ten final round vocabulary questions in 1:17. Chain Reaction host Dylan Lane emceed the playoff. Earlier preliminary winners were Noah Berman, 15 (St. Louis), and Daniel Weber, 17 (Pittsburgh). SATURDAY NIGHT JANUARY GSN BLOCKS: For the entire month, GSN will air three-hour marathons Saturday nights to serve as companions to the following evening's documentary. Jan. 6, the lineup is Family Feud from 8-9:30 p.m. and Card Sharks from 9:30-11 (all times ET/PT); Jan. 13, three one-hour episodes of Game Show Moments Gone Bananas; Jan. 20, a trio of one-hour Millionaire episodes; and Jan. 27, episodes featuring prominent women players: Password Plus (8 & 8:30), Weakest Link at 9 and an hour of To Tell the Truth and What's My Line? from 10 to 11. A LINGO NEW YEAR: GSN rings in 2007 with an afternoon and evening of Lingo. A five-hour marathon counteracts the bowl games from 3 to 8 p.m. (ET/PT). TWENTY ONE IS BACK: The 15 episodes of the 2000 remake of NBC's Twenty One return to GSN Wednesdays at 10 and Sundays at 7 (ET/PT) beginning Jan. 3 and 7. The shows, which include the then-record performance of Navy Lt. David Legler, were only repeated previously by GSN in the summer of 2003 as a Sunday marathon. OTHER GSN CHANGES: The 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. programming will be flip-flopped beginning Jan. 2, Tuesday through Friday.
